Oh the Wonderment of Maps

Maps – I love learning about maps! The making of maps is such a neat art form. It takes careful research and a keen sense of perspective to make a map by hand. Before the invention of the Guttenberg Press, this was the only way to produce maps; it was costly and time consuming, and the outcome was only one map! Wow. Maps were truly rare and precious resources. During the medieval period, they were often housed in important places such as monasteries and libraries. Today, it is hard to imagine a world without easily accessible maps. We are so spoiled to think that maps just came about out of nowhere. Maps are the result of hundreds of years of exploration and record keeping. The fact that men have the ability to make maps is a wonderful expression of God’s love for mankind in giving him both curiosity and creativity.
