The Gothic Architecture was characterized by high pointed archs and ribbed vaults. Stained glass was also characteristic. It was referred to as lux nova, which means new light. When light passed through it was transformed. Light, itself, was thought to be the visual image of God. Together these elements created something beautiful. However, not everyone liked the extravagance of the Gothic architcture of many cathedrals. In protest, Abbot Suger argued, "Objects of beauty can lead to an experience with God." He went on to also say, "Instead of turning our backs on the physical world, one can see the beauty and give thanks to the creator of beauty..."
