Gates of Hell

"Through me you enter into the city of woes
through me you enter into eternal pain,
through me you enter the population of loss.
. . .
abandon all hope, you who enter here."
Canto III (III.1–7)

Auguste Rodin designed this monumental sculpture in order to portray the Gate of Hell from Dante's Inferno. It stands at 6 m high, 4 m wide and 1 m deep. Moreover, it contains 180 figures including Paolo and Francesca, the fugitive love, the thinker, the kiss, and Adam and Eve.
